Curiosities: Here at Fika we’re all about the Swedish word ”fika”. But what does the word really mean? We get this question posed to us quite often, so we though it was time to address this.
There is a theory that it stems from the back slang of the old word for coffee which was Kaffi. The use of this can be traced back to the 1930′s.
Traditionally, “fika” means having a coffee break. The evolution of fika is interesting as it has transformed from the strict use of simply having coffee, to coffee and a pastry to perhaps not having coffee at all – just a break. The closest thing in the English tradition is the afternoon tea, but fika means so much more than that.
A “fika” is about having a well deserved break to re-inspire and to relax. It is a very social occasion that you can share with your family, friends or your favourite book. It is also a good way of getting to know other people. One of the most common first dates in Sweden is a fika. The beauty about fika is that it is such an essential part of the culture, you can have it anywhere at any time.
